Join Our Team

Desert Standards is growing. We're looking for driven people who take pride in their work and want to make Arizona communities better.

We're a small, focused team building something different in the compliance patrol space — proprietary technology, real accountability, and a higher standard of service. If that sounds like your kind of work, we'd like to hear from you.

Software Engineer

Phoenix, AZ (Remote-Friendly) Full-Time
Engineering

We're building a proprietary compliance and patrol management platform from the ground up — ALPR-powered license plate scanning, a mobile patrol app, GPS tracking, citation management, Axon body camera integration, real-time dashboards, and reporting tools used by HOA boards and property managers across Arizona. You'll have a direct hand in shaping every layer of the product.

What You'll Build
  • ALPR Integration — Build the pipeline that connects vehicle-mounted or phone-based license plate recognition cameras to our backend. Process plate reads in real time, match against permit databases, and trigger automated violation workflows
  • Mobile Patrol App — Develop a cross-platform app (React Native or Flutter) used by patrol officers nightly to scan plates, issue citations, capture photos, log GPS routes, and sync everything to the cloud in real time — including offline-first support for areas with poor connectivity
  • Web Dashboard — Build the property manager and HOA board-facing portal: citation management, repeat offender tracking, GPS route playback, compliance analytics, and exportable reports
  • Camera & Hardware Integration — Integrate with Axon body camera APIs, ALPR hardware (OpenALPR / Rekor / custom edge models), and GPS tracking devices
  • Backend & Data — Design APIs, data models, and infrastructure to handle real-time plate reads, image storage, violation history, and multi-tenant property management
Tech Stack
  • Frontend: React or Next.js, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS / Bootstrap
  • Mobile: React Native or Flutter (iOS + Android)
  • Backend: Python (FastAPI / Django) or Node.js
  • Database: PostgreSQL, Redis for caching and real-time events
  • ALPR / Vision: OpenALPR, Rekor Scout, or custom OCR models (OpenCV, Tesseract, YOLO-based plate detection)
  • Cloud: AWS (S3, Lambda, EC2) or GCP — image storage, serverless processing, CDN
  • Mapping: Leaflet.js / Mapbox for GPS route visualization and geofencing
  • Real-Time: WebSockets or MQTT for live patrol tracking and instant plate match alerts
What We're Looking For
  • 3+ years of professional software development experience
  • Strong full-stack skills — you're comfortable shipping a React frontend, a Python/Node API, and the database layer beneath it
  • Experience building or integrating with mobile apps (React Native or Flutter preferred)
  • Familiarity with computer vision, OCR, or image processing pipelines (ALPR experience is a major plus but not required — willingness to learn is)
  • Comfortable with cloud infrastructure (AWS or GCP) — deploying services, managing storage, setting up CI/CD
  • Experience with real-time systems: WebSockets, MQTT, push notifications, or event-driven architectures
  • Self-starter who can take a rough idea and turn it into working software without hand-holding
  • Bonus: experience with mapping/GIS, geofencing, edge computing, or hardware integrations
Why This Role
  • Early-stage opportunity with significant ownership — you'll architect systems from scratch, not maintain someone else's code
  • Build real software that patrol officers use every night in the field and property managers rely on every morning
  • Work on a genuinely interesting technical problem: real-time ALPR + mobile + cloud in a domain most engineers haven't touched
  • Small team, no bureaucracy, fast iteration — your code ships this week, not next quarter
